Bulls use balanced attack to stop Spurs

Posted by GameSetMatch on 30th October 2009

Luol Deng scored 17 points and added nine rebounds as the Chicago Bulls used a balanced scoring attack to beat the San Antonio Spurs 92-85 in their season-opening game on Thursday.

Derrick Rose finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Bulls, who lost to the Boston Celtics in a hard-fought seven-game first round playoff series last year.

Tyrus Thomas also scored 13 points, while Kirk Hinrich added 14 points off the bench. Joakim Noah had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulls.

Tim Duncan scored a game-high 28 points and 16 rebounds for the Spurs who had only one other player in double figures. Manu Ginobili scored 12 points and had six rebounds for San Antonio, who opened the season Wednesday with a victory over New Orleans.

Restless Derrick Rose ready for Act 2 with Bulls

Posted by GameSetMatch on 23rd October 2009

Whether he was shooting a video game commercial with Kobe Bryant or coaching teens in China with Dwight Howard, Derrick Rose had no trouble finding things to do during the offseason.

He wound up with some unwelcome downtime the past few weeks. The reigning Rookie of the Year for the Chicago Bulls was sidelined most of the preseason by an inflamed tendon behind his right ankle.

So as the curtain rises on the second act of a promising NBA career, Rose is just a little restless.

“It’s hard knowing that I want to play against some of the good players that are out there, be with my team,” Rose said. “We’ve got so many new players on the team. They’re young. They’re still trying to learn. We just need to hurry up and jell quick because we can make it far in the season.”

Bulls injury updates: Rose, Thomas still day-to-day

Posted by GameSetMatch on 13th October 2009

Because the injuries to Derrick Rose and Tyrus Thomas have lingered longer than initially expected, everyone — reporters, coaches and players — is finding new ways to ask and answer the same questions on a daily basis.

After Monday’s practice at the Berto Center, coach Vinny Del Negro was asked if Thomas ”did anything today.”

”He didn’t practice,” Del Negro said. ”He had breakfast and did a few other things.”

Rim shot, please.

Both players were injured in the Bulls’ first preseason game on Oct. 2 and were listed as day-to-day. Neither is expected to play tonight when the Bulls face the Milwaukee Bucks at the United Center.

With more than two weeks to go before the regular-season opener Oct.29 against the San Antonio Spurs at the United Center, there’s no sense of urgency to get both players back on the court just yet — but don’t try convincing Rose of that.

Rookie Knox delivering big returns for Bears

Posted by rsanrel on 9th October 2009

With one huge burst and some big assists from his blockers, Johnny Knox looked like Devin Hester as he outran just about everybody on his way to the end zone last week against Detroit.

Everybody, that is, except the Chicago Bears’ ballboy.

The Lions couldn’t touch Knox on his 102-yard kickoff return, but somehow, University of Illinois junior Darryl MaGee managed to keep pace most of the way on the sideline even though he was carrying several footballs.

“I’ve seen (the clip),” Knox said. “I talked to him about it. He’s pretty fast.”

In a way, it seems appropriate that MaGee got his moment in the spotlight from a rookie who keeps finding ways to grab it after playing in obscurity at Tyler Junior College and then Division II Abilene Christian in Texas, whether he’s catching touchdown passes or breaking off big returns.

Knox is third among rookie receivers with 190 yards and tied for the lead with two TD receptions. On kickoff returns, he’s averaging an NFL-leading 35.8 yards per return and emerging as a key component for a special-teams unit that ranks among the best.

The Bears are averaging a league-leading 31.3 yards per kickoff return. They are second with 501 total yards and three returns for 40 or more, and they’re tied for third with 13 returns for at least 20 yards.

They’re having similar success returning punts.

Chicago is tied with Minnesota and Cleveland for the league lead with three for 20 or more yards, and between the long returns and spot-on kicks, the special teams were particularly impressive against Detroit

Johnson, Gibson look solid

Posted by rsanrel on 7th October 2009

It would be foolish to read too much from the first couple of preseason games, but right now it’s look as if rookies James Johnson and Taj Gibson will be key contributors off the bench from the start of the season.

Gibson followed up his splendid debut last week against the Indiana Pacers with another solid effort in the Bulls’ thrilling 102-101 victory over the Utah Jazz Tuesday in London. Johnson also had a good game and gave the Bulls the win with a buzzer-beating short jumper.

Both rookies are active and athletic and will give the Bulls improved front-court depth. With Johnson and Gibson playing well, Tyrus Thomas better produce or else he could find himself losing playing time.

It’s old home week for ex-Wing Kopecky

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 7th October 2009

Tomas Kopecky almost became bulletin-board material for his old team, the Detroit Red Wings, on Tuesday.

Kopecky, who signed with the Blackhawks as a free agent during the offseason, played the last four seasons for the Wings and is looking forward to his first game against them on Thursday at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

”It’ll be fun, and more fun when we beat them,” Kopecky said.

The bluntness of that statement led to Kopecky being called on to elaborate after the Hawks’ practice at Johnny’s Ice House.

”I meant I would like to beat them. It’s not that I guarantee anything,” Kopecky said. ”I’m not pulling back. I’d love to beat those guys.”

The Bears finish the first quarter 3-1

Posted by GameSetMatch on 6th October 2009

Lovie Smith likes to talk about how he views football seasons in quarters and the Bears just finished their first. It wasn’t always pretty but it was certainly a success: a 3-1 start is probably all we could have hoped for, even if the games weren’t as aesthetically pleasing as we might have liked.

This was far from an easy 3-1. For all the talk of the Bears heading into the 2009 season with the league’s easiest schedule, Sunday’s home bout against the Lions was the only cupcake the Bears had in their first four games. The other three games were close, hard fought contests. There is little shame in losing by six at Lambeau to a Packers team that could win 10 games this year. Playing in Seattle – Seneca Wallace or no Seneca Wallace – is never an easy task, either. And I don’t think I need to defend the merits of a close victory at home against the defending champs.

If I were in the business of giving out grades, the Bears would earn an A- from me in quarter number one. It was good, sure, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. These Bears have a long way to climb before they reach their ceiling.

The good news is, Cubs’ nightmare season finally over

Posted by GameSetMatch on 5th October 2009

Lockers were being cleaned out and boxes were being filled with belongings as the Chicago Cubs hurried to get out of town at the end of a disappointing season.

“It’s a little weird to be packing up and heading home, because the last couple of years we’ve been still playing,” said Ryan Dempster, the losing pitcher Sunday as the Arizona Diamondbacks ended the year with a 5-2 victory.

Dempster, who won 17 games last season, gave up five runs and six hits in five innings, struck out 10 and walked one.

“I think a lot of us wish we had a little bit better year than we did,” he said.

Chicago Blackhawks lose to Florida Panthers 4-3

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 3rd October 2009

It was the perfect ending for the Finnish fans, and their hockey hero.

There was Panthers’ defenseman Ville Koistinen, scoring a tying goal in the third period and then the winning goal in the shootout to make the first NHL regular season game in Finland a memorable one.

The Panthers beat the Blackhawks 4-3 Friday night at Hartwall Arena, prevailing when goalie Tomas Vokoun blocked Patrick Sharp’s shot with his left leg after Koistinen beat Cristobal Huet top shelf. Koistinen glided back toward the bench with his arm stretched out toward the roaring fans.

“This game was unbelievable. First of all to play here in Finland, then to score a goal and score a game winner,” said Koistinen, who was moved to forward for Friday’s game. “This is more than a dream right now.”

Not exactly billboard treatment, but Hawks get pleasant welcome

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 2nd October 2009

The first thing you notice while prowling this picturesque city are the signs. They have longer words in them then you ever will see in the United States, no matter what the subject matter.

On the billboards at Hartwall Arena are ads for ”Kymppivoima” (a power company), ”Varamiespalvelu” (an employment agency) and ”Huoneistokeskus” (a real-estate firm).

”That’s just because we put our words together,” explained a Helsinki sportswriter who introduced himself as just ”Pasi.”

Although hockey is the clear-cut No. 1 sport in Finland, very few of those signs promoted the first NHL regular-season games played here. Even at the Hilton International, one of the few American hotel chains in this city, there was nothing promoting the games today and Saturday.

Hartwall Arena was built for the World Championships of 1997. It’s a modern building with a practice rink in the basement and seating for about 15,000. Still, despite the hockey enthusiasm claimed by the NHL and game promoters, Wednesday’s exhibition between the Florida Panthers and Finnish powerhouse Jokerit wasn’t close to a sellout, and the games involving the Hawks might not be, either.
