Buehrle’s play in fifth inning leaves everyone in awe

Posted by GameSetMatch on 6th April 2010

If you happened to be visiting the bathroom at the most inopportune time Monday or if you were bent over searching for a contact lens or if for some deeply held yet tragically misguided reason you have sworn off TV sports, let me tell you about Mark Buehrle’s fielding play.

I’m not sure I’ll do it justice. I’m not sure replays do it justice.

This was the fifth inning of the White Sox’ 6-0 Opening Day victory over Cleveland, and their pitcher was rolling along, smooth as fresh pavement. Indians catcher Lou Marson hit a hard grounder back at Buehrle, who instinctively made like Blackhawks goalie Antti Niemi and kicked at the ball with his left leg. Big save.

The ball caromed toward the first-base line, and Buehrle gave chase. It looked futile, but somebody forgot to tell the Sox ace this. When he arrived at the intersection of Forget It and Dude, You Have No Chance, Buehrle scooped up the ball with his glove and, without looking, flipped it in one motion between his legs to first baseman Paul Konerko, who caught it barehanded.

Buehrle completes perfect game to throttle Rays

Posted by admin on 24th July 2009

The 105th pitch of Mark Buehrle’s day broke in toward Gabe Kapler, who turned on it and connected. Buehrle looked up and knew — his perfect game was in jeopardy.

Just in as a defensive replacement, Chicago White Sox center fielder DeWayne Wise sprinted toward the fence in left-center, a dozen strides. What happened next would be either a moment of baseball magic or the ninth-inning end of Buehrle’s bid for perfection against the Tampa Bay Rays. Wise jumped and extended his right arm above the top of the 8-foot wall. The ball landed in his glove’s webbing but then popped out for a split second as he was caroming off the wall and stumbling on the warning track. Wise grabbed it with his bare left hand, fell to the ground and rolled. He bounced.

Buehrle tosses perfect game with Wise assist

Posted by admin on 23rd July 2009

Mark Buehrle pitched the 17th perfect game all-time in the regular season, and Chicago White Sox center fielder Dewayne Wise got the assist.

Just into the game as a defensive replacement, Wise robbed Gabe Kapler of a leadoff home run in the ninth inning and Buehrle coolly closed out a 5-0 victory Thursday over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Wise took over in center field from Scott Podsednik, who shifted to left. With the count 2-2, Kapler hit a drive to deep left-center. Wise sprinted, jumped and got his glove above the fence to rob Kapler of a home run.
The ball almost came out when Wise caromed off the fence, stumbled, fell to the ground and rolled. But he bounced right up, proudly displaying the ball for the crowd in his bare left hand.

All-Star Buehrle eager to play in hometown

Posted by admin on 14th July 2009

Mark Buehrle doesn’t apologize or try to hide it. He’s a Cardinals fan.

The White Sox lefty, who grew up in the St. Louis suburb of St. Charles, hasn’t been afraid to voice his admiration for his hometown team over the years. Buehrle, making his fourth All-Star appearance but the first in his hometown, was shown on FOX cameras during the 2006 World Series at Busch Stadium wearing a Cardinals hat. He has never pitched in St. Louis or against the Cards, meaning his first outing could come Tuesday night with 43 of his family and friends in attendance.

Buehrle still awed to be All-Star

Posted by admin on 6th July 2009

Mark Buehrle has an incredibly impressive 130-89 career record.

Chicago’s crafty southpaw threw a no-hitter against Texas in 2007, won two postseason contests and even saved a game in the 2005 World Series sweep by the White Sox of Houston. The happily married father of two also is working in the second season of a four-year, $56 million contract.

It would be an understatement to say the humble, easy-going Major Leaguer is living the dream.
