With a 24-28 record, the Chicago Cubs are not exactly off to a hot start. But one man is off to a phenomenal start- Carlos Marmol. It seems as if many closers come and go in this era of baseball. Two years ago, Marmol showed signs of becoming a great reliever. Last year, he was not bad, but was not what Cubs fans would be hoping for. But at age 27, Marmol could be headed for a breakout season.

On the forefront, Marmol is 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA, which is fantastic. He has converted 11 out of 13 save opportunities, which is certainly solid. But what is just awesome is the fact that he has struck out 49 batters in 24.2 innings (that’s about two per inning, for those who didn’t pass first grade). That just shows that Marmol possesses dominance right now, and can make him a feared closer.

So Cubs fans, you are used to pain. But in 2010, get ready for a dominant closer.

The White Sox were expected to compete for the American League Central this season. If both their offense and starting pitching do not improve, the White Sox season will be over by the All Star break.

Coming into the season, most believed that the White Sox pitching staff was as good as any in baseball, but there was a chance that their offense could not score enough runs. So far, this seems to be the case, as the White Sox offense is certainly struggling. Thus far, the White Sox rank 23 in the MLB in runs scored, and 28 in batting average, hitting just .223. The lone offensive bright spot thus far has been the enigmatic Andruw Jones, who conveiantly only seems to hit when his contract is set to expire. The biggest worry for the Ozzie Guillen and Kenny Williams has to be outfielder Carlos Quentin. Queintin struggled through an injury plauged season last year after having a fantastic year in 2008. If Quentin is unable to regain his 2008 form, the White Sox will need to go out and find a big bat in the outfield to remain competitive in the NL Central.

Though the White Sox were expecting to have one of the top rotations in baseball this season, their starters have been inconsistent to start. Mark Buehrle and John Danks have both been lights out, but after that, the starting pitching has not been good. Gavin Floyd, who had seemed to put it all together over the past two seasons has been awful in two of his first three starts. Jake Peavy and Freddie Garcia also been plauged by inconsistency early on. If the White Sox intend to play meaningful games into the late summer and fall, their starting pitching has to carry them. GM Kenny Williams has invested alot of money into the rotation and the starters must go deep into games and take pressure off of the offense if they White Sox are going to succeed.

If you happened to be visiting the bathroom at the most inopportune time Monday or if you were bent over searching for a contact lens or if for some deeply held yet tragically misguided reason you have sworn off TV sports, let me tell you about Mark Buehrle's fielding play. I'm not sure I'll do it justice. I'm not sure replays do it justice.

This was the fifth inning of the White Sox' 6-0 Opening Day victory over Cleveland, and their pitcher was rolling along, smooth as fresh pavement. Indians catcher Lou Marson hit a hard grounder back at Buehrle, who instinctively made like Blackhawks goalie Antti Niemi and kicked at the ball with his left leg. Big save.

The ball caromed toward the first-base line, and Buehrle gave chase. It looked futile, but somebody forgot to tell the Sox ace this. I’m not sure replays do it justice.

This was the fifth inning of the White Sox’ 6-0 Opening Day victory over Cleveland, and their pitcher was rolling along, smooth as fresh pavement.

When he arrived at the intersection of Forget It and Dude, You Have No Chance, Buehrle scooped up the ball with his glove and, without looking, flipped it in one motion between his legs to first baseman Paul Konerko, who caught it barehanded.

Click here to read the full article – By RICK MORRISSEY of Chicago Sun-Times

One thing is true about Opening Day in baseball: It's a lot easier to jump to conclusions about a team than it is to draw them after one game. But such is the nature of Opening Day.

If the Cubs had lost 16-5 in the middle of July instead of Monday, not a lot would have been said.

But because it was Opening Day, with all of Chicago media at Turner Field and fans starving for games that count, the result drew swift and heated reaction.

On the Daily Herald's baseball blog, Chicago's Inside Pitch, suggestions included:

• Offering pitchers Carlos Zambrano and Carlos Marmol in trades.

• Discussing third baseman Aramis Ramirez' opt-out clause in his contract.

• Talking about the possibility of trading first baseman Derrek Lee if the Cubs are out of the race.

The Kansas City Royals announced Friday they traded utility player Mark Teahen to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for infielders Chris Getz and Josh Fields.
Additionally, the White Sox received cash considerations from the Royals.

Teahen, 28, who has spent his entire five-year career with the Royals, has played every position other than pitcher and catcher. In 2009, he batted. 271 with 12 homers and 50 runs batted in for Kansas City in 144 games.

In 676 career games, Teahen, who was originally dealt to the Royals from Oakland in a three-team deal that sent Carlos Beltran to Houston, has a .269 batting average, 59 homers and 293 RBI. It's possible that Teahen could play right field next year for Chicago, as the White Sox bought out Jermaine Dye's contract Friday.

Teahen is eligible for arbitration this offseason.

Lockers were being cleaned out and boxes were being filled with belongings as the Chicago Cubs hurried to get out of town at the end of a disappointing season. "It's a little weird to be packing up and heading home, because the last couple of years we've been still playing," said Ryan Dempster, the losing pitcher Sunday as the Arizona Diamondbacks ended the year with a 5-2 victory.

Dempster, who won 17 games last season, gave up five runs and six hits in five innings, struck out 10 and walked one.

"I think a lot of us wish we had a little bit better year than we did," he said.

The Cubs' championship drought reached 101 years Tuesday night when the Rockies' victory over the Brewers eliminated them from the National League wild card chase.
But the end came with far less fanfare than that which greeted the 100-year mark last October at Dodger Stadium, when the Dodgers swept the Cubs in the National League Division Series.

Conventional wisdom said the pressure was off the Cubs in 2009 because mentions of the streak would not be as prevalent as 2008.

"Last year, from Day One, that was the question," first baseman Derrek Lee said when camp opened in February. "There are definitely fewer questions so far. That 100-year thing made for a good story, so maybe it will be a little quieter year. I hope it helps. Last year we had a great regular season. We just flopped at the wrong time. But maybe it will take a little pressure off, not having to answer the 100-year question. Who knows?"
