Who is Jay Cutler? Do you know? Do you have any real sense of the most-spotlighted athlete in our city at this time?
And if you’re honest, I think you’ll admit you don’t, either.
Derrick Rose, without question the other leading athlete celeb in town, is an open book, a veritable billboard of information and self-revelation compared to Cutler. Patrick Kane, who is moving up the chart with a bullet, is moderately chatty and lightly provocative, even when dealing with taxi-driver misfortunes.
But Cutler, the long-term and very wealthy face of our franchise sports team — the Bears rule and always will rule in a city of broad shoulders — has been here more than a half-year, yet it’s as though he hasn’t been here at all except for the football games, the eight-second sound bites and the often-blank-faced or seemingly irritated looks during officially sanctioned media moments.

A confident Matt Forte believes the Bears (2-1) should have success running the ball against the Lions (1-2) on Sunday even if statistics say the Bears are the fifth-worst rushing team in the league.
“When we put our mind to it, we can run against any team,” Forte said. “It’s difficult running in the NFL. We know that. But if we get bodies on people and stay strong, we can run the ball.”
Forte was by no means assessing blame. In fact, he put the onus on himself to run harder and break more tackles.
The bottom line is the Bears essentially are running in place. They enter Sunday’s game averaging a dismal 2.8 yards per carry, second to last in the league behind the Chargers.
Forte is 29th in the league in rushing with 150 yards on 59 carries through three games. He is the only back among the top 30 averaging less than 3.0 yards per carry with a 2.6 average. And this is the same player who compiled 304 yards over his first three games as a rookie last season.

Robbie Gould aimed his game-winning field goal from 44 yards just inside the left upright, and the ball never veered from the middle as he kicked the Bears to victory Sunday with 15 seconds left.
The Lock Haven, Pa., native, who played at Penn State, had about 10 family members and friends in attendance, some of them Pittsburgh Steelers fans.
”It’s definitely big against anyone,” he said. ”The biggest thing is it is a home-state team, Pittsburgh or Philadelphia, and that is what is kind of great about it. [Some friends there to see him] were cheering for me, but I don’t know if they were cheering so much [on] that kick.”
It was the eighth game-winner for Gould and the 14th consecutive field goal he has hit dating to Week11 last season. Gould was 9-for-9 in the preseason and made 92 percent of kicks in training camp, according to special-teams coordinator Dave Toub. That’s why Toub said it was virtually an automatic decision to kick after a one-yard run by Matt Forte to the middle of the field on third down gave Gould his preferred field position.

One game into the preseason and already Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has had to smooth things out with one of his wide receivers.
Cutler commented to reporters about wide receiver Devin Hester’s failure to break up an interception on a pass that fell short Saturday night following the team’s 27-20 preseason loss to Buffalo. His remark seemed to rub some people the wrong way.
“Devin is more of a go-get-it guy; he is not really a back shoulder or jump-up-and-get-it (guy),” Cutler said Saturday. “You learn from it.

The Chicago Bears haven’t even begun training camp practices and already there are signs they will supplant the Dallas Cowboys as the NFL’s best soap opera.
Brian Urlacher is on record as denying he called Jay Cutler a word that’s a euphemism for, among other things, a cat.
A Bears spokesman also has issued a denial, even though he didn’t speak with the former Bear receiver (Bobby Wade) who told a Minnesota radio station he heard Urlacher hurl the insult.

Charles Tillman doesn’t know quite what to make about the fuss in the wake of his back surgery two weeks ago, and the cornerback vowed to be ready for the regular season Tuesday on the Bears’ Web site.
The club, however, said Tillman will be out indefinitely following surgery to remove a piece of disc fragment from his lower back. The surgery was performed two weeks ago in Los Angeles by Dr. Robert Watkins. The timetable for a return to the field was six to 12 weeks, meaning he has four to 10 weeks to go. Four weeks would bring him back about two weeks before the start of the regular season. The outlying number would keep him out for at least the first three weeks of the regular season.

Rod Woodson knows a thing or two about defense. The 11-time Pro Bowl defensive back and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2009 compiled his list of the game’s top five linebackers last week on the NFL Network.
Woodson listed Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher in a tie for fifth place with the New York Jets’ Bart Scott. “He’s been hurt the last few years,” Woodson said of Urlacher. “But the last 10 years, he has been a dominant linebacker. A downhill linebacker. That’s what I was looking for, a mike [linebacker] that will come down and thump you.”

Michael Dean Perry knows the day is coming when his good-natured, gap-toothed older brother, who’s nicknamed “The Fridge,” will be back to his old, affable self.
But that will take some time, and William Perry understands that, Michael Dean said. William, the former NFL defensive lineman famous for his smile and 360-pound size, spent more than a month at Aiken Regional Medical Center this spring, suffering from Guillain-Barre syndrome, a disease where the body’s immune system attacks its peripheral nerves.

Says new Chicago Bears quarterback fine as leader
Devin Hester says he has heard enough. He is tired of hearing the criticism that new Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is not a mature, capable leader. “If you haven’t been around a person like Cutler, how could you say something like that?” Hester said before appearing in a photo shoot Monday evening at Soldier Field for an Under Armour commercial. In recent weeks, Super Bowl-winning coaches Tony Dungy and Mike Ditka have been among those who have expressed reservations about Cutler’s maturity level.
